After several weeks of reading about, researching, and inquiring about Native Americans of the regions of what is now the United States, students are beginning to design their final writing project. The content of our final non-fiction writing piece will be the choice of each student, but we have learned a variety of formats, features, and organization strategies that students will use. Some students are thinking about comparing one strand, such as housing, across the various regions. Other students are writing about a number of strands in one region. We are excited to put our hard work together in the next week or two.
We moved our math assessment to Monday and Tuesday of this week. We just ran out of time to review last week, and we wanted to give everyone a chance to feel confident about all they have learned in this geometry unit. We will begin unit seven later this week. Unit 7 focuses on multiplication strategies.
Valentines Day is coming up. A few folks have asked about cards and boxes. We are not making boxes or bags at school this year. Students are welcome to create either a box or bag of their choice at home. This may be as simple as a gift bag with the child's name on it or as elaborate as a Valentine monster with the mail slot as a mouth. Just make sure the opening is large (for easy delivery) but the box or bag itself does not take up more than the surface of a child's desk... please.
Please have children bring in the box or bag he or she creates at home on or after Monday, February 9 (and by the 12th of course). In addition, each child should bring in enough valentines for the class. We have 22 students this year. We will not allow students to visit other classrooms to deliver valentines, so please use the good ole' snail mail to share love outside of our class. Thanks! Finally, adding candy, pencils, etc. as long as they are similar for all of the children in the class, and please be mindful of our nut allergies. Valentines should come to school the week of the 9th as well. (It is up to each child/family if these will be store bought or homemade.)
Happy birthday this month to Susan, Sears and Sarah Britton!
Thanks, and have a great week!
Meadow & Anna
