Hi Families-
Our main happenings this week are preparation and practice for Friday’s Living Museum and review for our unit 9 math assessment. Our living museum has been a wonderful project that naturally crosses through the curriculum. Of course we are reading biographies, practicing a variety of note taking, and writing speeches for our characters. In addition, we will be working on a Living Museum timeline to emphasize the amount of time that passes between characters that are studied in our class. To top it off, our amazing inGen teachers had the kids creating circuits to make LED light buttons today (which they may choose to use for the living museum). Talk about putting it all together - amazing!
Unit 9, in math, has been more challenging than any unit so far. Rather than giving the review as an “option” this week, we broke it down into three sections and have made it a requirement for each night (Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday). If you notice your child having difficulty in a particular area, please have him or her write a note on the review to us (such as, “I could use some help with this problem.”). We are watching in class too. Our assessment will be on Thursday and Friday.
In addition to our history work in Social Studies, we also began our economics unit today. This week we will cover needs and wants, supply and demand, and our currency system went into effect today. Homework notes are now combined with a “fine” of $5.00 if homework is not turned in. We are being tough on the kids about this. We want them to be prepared for forth grade and accustomed to accepting the penalty - even if they did the work but forgot to turn it in. Thank you, in advance, for supporting us on this. On the up side, the students are paid if they do their school job - $5.00 a day, and they get $10.00 at the start of each week. Have them tell you about the rent they must pay too.
As you know, we have a lot coming up this week. Please visit with your child and make sure they know which events you are able to make and which events you are unable to make. It also helps us if you give us a heads up so we can watch out for your little one if you are not able to come. We know (first hand!) that most parents can’t make it to all of the events in the spring. We remind the children of this as well, but it helps if they know before the event if you will not be able to make it. (Definitely let us know, if you haven’t already, if you are not able to come to Mom’s Day or the Living Museum.) We will do all of the work for the living museum at school. They should have their books here, not at home. The only thing they need to do at home is come up with what they want to wear and make a poster or trifold board - if they choose to. Props are fine, as long as they are small and safe. Let us know if you have any questions. We are excited!
Thank you so much for all you do. We are learning so much and having lots of fun each day! We look forward to seeing you Wednesday at the music show and/or Friday at the living museum. Have a great week!
Love,
Meadow & Anna
