Hi Families,
We were happy to hear that many of you were able to enjoy the 3rd grade astronomy night at Fernbank. It looked like a great night to see the moon, and the students that were able to go are giving the evening rave reviews! Many thanks to all of you who helped make it happen.
Please be sure to check the dates to the right and let us know if your child needs a “special friend” for Mom’s Day or the Living Museum. We are excited about our busy spring!
Here’s what’s going on this week:
Reading Workshop:
This week we kick off our unit of study on biographies! We will be comparing and contrasting expository and narrative biography texts. We will also apply our fiction reading skills to narrative non-fiction. Students will choose one person who has made a significant impact on the world to study in depth. Each student will portray, study, and present one person in our upcoming Living Museum.
Writing Workshop & Social Studies:
As we continue to practice persuasive writing, we bill begin to put our writing to use by “Writing to Make a Real World Difference”. Since we have learned about how an idea can be turned into a law, we will think of ways we can use our writing to make a change. Many students are putting ideas into play of ways they can help people and animals using the power of the pen (or pencil in our case). We have been working hard to come up with problems in our community - working side by side with Mrs. Darsey’s class - and now we are thinking of ways we can solve them. We are excited to see how we can make a difference.
Math:
The lessons in unit nine that we will work on this week involve estimating money amounts and using a variety of multiplication strategies. Students multiply using mental math and the partial-products algorithm. We will learn to identify whole-number factors of whole numbers this week. Finally, we will practice sharing money in equal amounts - division!
