Happy birthday last week to both Sabritt and Finn! It was exciting to celebrate with our friends on their special days!
Our first full week was stuffed with learning and fun. We are getting the hang of the new routines and responsibilities of third grade. Please don't worry if homework or expectations are still a bit confusing. We will cover everything in depth on Curriculum Night next week. So far, we are so proud of how well the class is catching on to what's expected of third graders!
Please refer to our math page for specific details on exactly what we cover each lesson in Everyday Math. We continue with our lessons in Unit 1 which focus on equivalent numbers, the language of chance events and finding differences.
Reading and Writing Workshops are also off to a strong start. This week our readers focus on what makes a book "Just Right" and why that matters. Our writers review what's expected in 3rd grade when it comes to writing including grammar and spelling. This week's grammar focus will be on nouns (common, proper and pronouns) and punctuation. We are also enjoying a phonics kick start to our Word Study program.
Social Studies is currently centered on our class community, what we expect from ourselves and each other, this year. We also began our weekly review of Geography. A portion of our Social Studies Curriculum focuses on knowing the 50 states, where they are, and the state capitals.
Students are already using their new 3rd grade planners, and should refer to them for the week's homework. Math Homelinks for the week are: (We don't have one Monday.) 1.6 - Tuesday, 1.7 - Wednesday, and 1.8 on Thursday. Our weekly writing assignment will require students to draw a map of a place special to them in their writing notebooks. Special places bring on strong memories which inspire writers. Students are also to label the maps they draw with nouns. The students will see an example of how to do this in class. The reading expectations are outlined on the homework page. Don't forget to log your reading!
We look forward to seeing you soon!

Please enjoy our third grade teacher response to the ALS awareness challenge. Ms. Wright was there too. She was our videographer! Our team is amazing!
