Hi Families,
We have an exciting opportunity this year. Our class will be working closely with Mrs. Schnider, our art teacher, to learn about folk art and create some pieces or a class piece that will tie in with our upcoming character study in reading. We will be visiting the permanent folk art collection on our trip to the High Museum of Art next week. Over the next few days, visit with your child about folk art. Talk about what it is and what folk art you may have seen together as a family. This is going to be an exciting ongoing project for our class!
Here is what is going on in our subject areas:
Math:
Our math assessments are coming home today. Please look over the unit one assessment with your child, then sign and return the assessment in the blue folder. Remember that part A assesses what we expect the students to know, part B is used to guide our instruction for our upcoming unit, and the Open Response is a challenging problem solving opportunity. We look at this portion two times. The first time, we assess students on how they do on their own (after we go over it as a class). The second time, the reengagement, we all discuss the possible solutions to the open response problem, students talk with partners and in small groups, and they are given the opportunity to make corrections (using colored pencils). A second score is given for the reengagement. It's possible for a student to score a 1 the first time, and a 4 the second time. The idea is for the students to learn from this experience.
This week we will begin unit two in math. Unit two focuses on adding and subtracting whole numbers. More information can be found about this unit and each lesson in the parent letter you read last week and on the Everyday Math website.
This week's math homework:
Practice addition and subtraction math facts. and the following home links are to be done after each lesson:
Monday: 2.1
Tuesday: 2.2
Wednesday: 2.3
Thursday: 2.4
Friday: 2.5 (Turn this in on Monday.)
Home link work and any additional work should be recorded and turned in on the math log each week.
In Writing we are wrapping up our personal narrative pieces. Students have been given a checklist to review of just what we are looking for in these pieces. They will be partner editing and conferencing with teachers this week to prepare a final piece to publish. This week's writing homework came home today on a half slip of paper. Students should complete this (and all) writing assignments in their writing notebook, and this notebook should come back to school each day.
Our grammar focus this weeks includes reviewing proper punctuation of dialogue - using quotation marks, and apostrophes in contractions and with singular possessives. Students are expected to use appropriate ending punctuation with all sentences at this point in the year.
In reading we are learning more about characters in the books we read. Strong readers pay close attention to details, notice what their characters do, say, and think. We also notice what is happening around the main character (the setting and other characters) in our reading, and we infer to fill in gaps. Our strategies include thinking, talking, acting, sketching and jotting. Students should continue to read and log at home for at least 30 minutes at least four times a week. Thanks so much for helping add up the minutes and pages this past week!
Social Studies is exciting this week, as we will begin our exploration study of the United States regions. Today, students came up with questions they have about regions. They will work in small groups to answer questions they have. We will teach them research and study skills and allow them to create presentations in small groups. We will share this exciting project through our personal portfolio websites we are creating in inGen! While students will be assessed on all 50 states later in the year, go ahead and begin practicing where the states are located at home. This week, begin with the southeast region.
Also this week, we want to wish a happy birthday to Sarah who turned nine on Sunday. Thank you all for your support. We are loving working with your children! Have a great week!
