While this past week was great, we think this week will be even better! We have so much to look forward to with our field trip to the High Museum of Art on Tuesday and 3rd Grade Fun Night on Friday. We can't wait!
Math:
This week in math we will continue with unit two. Please pay attention to the dates the home links are to be done this week. We won't have math on Tuesday (because of our field trip) and 2.7 will be a two day lesson, so that home link should be done on Thursday night. Our lessons this week will focus on comparison number studies, using the partial sums algorithm, and subtraction algorithms.
This week's Math Homework:
Practice using Everyday Math games.
REMEMBER TO LOG your math each day.
Monday: Home Link 2.6
Tuesday: No Home Link
Wednesday: No Home Link
Thursday: Home Link 2.7
Friday: CHANGE: We will now do the partial sums page that came home in folders. This page is due Monday. Home Link 2.8 will be Monday night's homework and will now be due Tuesday. Thanks
For a review of how to do partial sums, see the pages that came home this week or go to the on line Student Reference Book. This link should take you there:

Home Link 2.8 (Due TUESDAY)
Social Studies:
We will continue to add states to our regions and students will continue to look for answers to questions they have for regions. We are still focusing on the southeast region together.
Homework: Practice southeastern states and capitals.
Reading:
We continue to study our characters in our reading. By studying the actions of our characters, readers make powerful predictions about what characters will do next. We are doing this with our read aloud, Charlotte's Web, and students are doing this in their independent "just right" books as well. Talk with your child about the characters in books he or she is reading at home. How do the characters change? What does it say in the text to prove this? Ask your little one to make predictions about what their character in his or her story will do next.
We are very proud of the hard work the students are doing with reading logs both in class and at home. Keep reading and logging. Thanks so much for your support with the total minutes and pages!
Writing:
Editing and revising are our key lesson features in our writing workshops this week. Most students have completed at least one draft of a piece they wish to publish (as well as several other personal narrative pieces). This week we will continue to emphasize proper grammar, spelling words on the word wall correctly in writing, and using our student checklist to make sure we include all of the features strong writers use when writing personal narratives.
Writing Homework this week is a free write! Students may write about anything they wish this week. This should be done, as always, in the writing notebook and the guidelines for beginning of the year (glued inside) should be followed.
Word Study Words - In addition to our Words Their Way word study lessons, we are working individually with students to help them learn the "Word Wall" words. These are the same words found (starting this week) in the back of the white notebooks. Please have your child show you what words he or she is working on at this time. Also ask them to show you how to study the words using the SOS technique. (Directions are also in the notebook right behind the words.) Because most of these words are not spelled phonetically, they just have to be committed to memory. This technique is helpful for students who have trouble memorizing the spelling of words. Please note that some children don't have any words to practice, some have two or four, and others may have ten. Do not let this discourage you or your child. It is not an indicator of how smart anyone is - as we so carefully explained to the kids. Some people just need to use strategies to "get the words in there". If your child has some words to practice, please work with him or her on this, but don't let it be a stressful event. Thanks so much for your support!
We had an exciting visit to inGen Studio this week as you may have seen on Twitter. We added categories to our pages/portfolios and added a bio. Our next step is to create a visual that we will work from when creating our folk art pieces in our Folk Art Character Study.
Have a great week!
Love,
Meadow & Anna
