Welcome back and Happy New Year! We hope everyone enjoyed winter break and special holiday time with family and friends. We have missed our class and look forward to a great kick off to 2015.
The curriculum updates are below. In addition there are great new photos on our site. Be sure to see what’s new. Many thanks to all of our amazing parents who helped with all of the winter holiday events - especially the musical and our fun class party. Thank you!
Here’s what we are learning:
Math: Unit five assessments will come home this week. Please look over these assessments with your child and let us know if you have any questions. We are pleased with how well the students did on this assessment. We will begin unit six in Everyday Math this week. This unit centers on Geometry and has three primary areas of focus: investigation of line segments, rays, and line segments; exploration of polygons; and drawing and measuring angles.
Social Studies: We are comparing the lifestyles and cultures of many of the various tribes who lived in North America long before colonists arrived. In addition we continue to practice our states and capitals. Our next quiz will cover the states and capitals on the west. This will be on Friday, 1/23.
Reading & Writing Workshops: Our language arts units of study are cross-curricular with our Native American study in social studies. We are reading independently, in partnerships, and in groups about the ways of life of Native Americans. While we will be doing some non-fiction writing in this study, students will also be writing non-fiction pieces in other areas of interest.
Homework for the week of 1/5:
Reading: Read and Log at least 4four nights for at least twenty minutes each night. Remember to total your log for both reading and math before turning it in on Monday.
Math: Play Games and practice math facts. Be sure to log any multiplication fact practice on your math log (but do not return these sheets to school). Our next multiplication fact test will be on Friday, 1/16. It will cover the X 10s.
Home Links: Due the following day.
* Make sure that all old Home Links are torn out and that you are on 6.1.
Monday: 6.1
Tuesday: 6.2
Wednesday: 6.3
Thursday: 6.4
Friday: 6.5 (Due Monday)
Writing: Free Write in Writing Journal - Due Monday
You may choose to write about something special you did while on break, or you may choose to do a creative writing piece of your choice. This is your choice. Please write at least three pages for this assignment. (1 front, 2 back, 3 front)
Word Study/ Spelling: Refer to new word list and highlighted words on Word Wall list. (This will go home on Tuesday.)
We will have our next assessment on Friday, 1/23.
Have a great week!
Meadow & Anna
