Social studies has been a tremendous part of all of our studies these past couple of weeks. We are so proud of the wonderful (100% student written and created) video for Hispanic Heritage Month that our class made. Please be sure to enjoy watching it with your little one. You can find it at the bottom of this post. They learned so very much and did a fabulous job with their project to teach others about Sonia Sotomayor and her accomplishments. We will continue to learn more about other cultures in Chinese class and with an upcoming Diwali presentation. Each week, we will also continue to review our states and capitals, and students will resume work on region projects next week.
Social Studies Homework: Please continue to practice those states and capitals. We will quiz the Northeast Region on Thursday, October 30.
(Maine, Vermont, Maryland, New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey)
The class has enjoyed exploring measurement - especially with area and perimeter in math. We will continue to work on Unit 3 next week, and we should take the unit assessment the week of October 22. Please continue to review those addition and subtraction math facts. We will soon begin math mad minutes. The students are eager to begin multiplication, but we want them to have addition and subtraction down pat first.
Math Homework:
Fill out math log each week.
Monday: Homelink 3.5
Tuesday: Homelink 3.6
Wednesday: Homelink 3.7
Thursday: Homelink 3.8
Friday: Homelink 3.9 (Due Monday)
This upcoming week will be the kick off of our first book clubs in third grade Reading Workshop! Students have been applying what they have learned about character development toward our latest read aloud. The will do the same in book clubs in addition to setting goals and following plot development. In addition to our workshop lessons, each week we will have one or two comprehension check or sequencing practices.
Reading Homework: Continue to read at least four days a week for 30 minutes each day. Don't forget to log!
We hope you enjoyed the personal narrative pieces that came home this week. Once your child shares his or her piece with you, please send the writing piece back to school so we can display the work.
This week we began our study of realistic fiction in writing. Students are beginning to think of ways writers develop a clear plot by asking the following questions:
Our grammar focus will be on strong verbs, enhancing sentences, and appropriate use of the apostrophe with possessives.
Writing Homework:
Writing Practice Page (in folder on Monday)
Please enjoy the photos. We added several today. We hope to see you at the game tonight or at World Fest on Sunday. Have a great weekend!

This week we began our study of realistic fiction in writing. Students are beginning to think of ways writers develop a clear plot by asking the following questions:
- Who is the main character?
- What does he or she want?
- What is the person's problem, or what stands in his or her way?
- What is the solution? &
- How does the story end?
Our grammar focus will be on strong verbs, enhancing sentences, and appropriate use of the apostrophe with possessives.
