We hope everyone had the chance to enjoy the photos we posted from the fall festival and Chinese cooking. The celebrations continue with Charlie P. and Christian's birthday today. Happy Birthday!
The students have been working hard on their story mountain - a plan - for their realistic fiction writing. See the chart above to get a better understanding of just what a story mountain is.
Writing Homework: Write an alternate beginning for the realistic piece (or for one of the pieces) you have been working on in class. This should be done in the writing notebook and is due Monday.
Reading has been fun with book clubs. We are enjoying watching our characters develop as we follow them through a series. We have just completed our first books. Ask your child what book he or she is reading.
Reading Homework is to continue to read at least four nights a week for 30 minutes a night. Log and total your reading each week. We will share highest number of pages, minutes and days this week. Reading is the MOST important homework we have in third grade.
The unit three assessment in math will come home this week. Please sign and return these after taking some time to look over them. We spent a lot of time on the Open Response for this unit, as it was tricky. We are so proud of how hard the kids worked to take on this challenge!
We are now working in unit four in math, and we are focusing on what makes a math problem a multiplication problem. We will also explore arrays and division stories.
Math Homework: Today students brought home the first Fast Fact Multiplication pack. Our first quiz will be on the 0's and 1's. That will take place this Friday. Please read the cover page, and let us know if you have any questions. Don't forget to LOG your multiplication practice on your MATH LOG.
Our Homelinks in math for the week are:
Monday: No Homelink
Tuesday: Homelink 4.2
Wednesday: Homelink 4.3
Thursday: Homelink 4.4
Friday: No Homelink
Social Studies has been quite exciting with all of our fabulous Chinese lessons. Mrs. Walden taught us how to make Chinese dumplings as a culminating lesson. They were delicious!
We are back to work, now, in our small region groups. Each group is putting together a presentation of their chosen region of the United States. Ask your child what his or her region is and what he or she has learned so far!
Social Studies homework is to begin to study states and capitals of the midwest.
We are continuing to weave grammar and mechanics throughout all subject areas. Our most recent word study has been the three sounds the suffix -ed: /t/, /d/, and /id/. We also talked about when verbs are used in the past tense. In addition, we are learning to recognize when to indent when writing, when to start a new paragraph, and different ways to show conversation in writing. A new list of Word Wall Words came home last week for many students. If there are highlighted words on the list, they should be practiced.
Thank you again to everyone who made last week so special. The kids (and teachers) had a ball! Have a great week!
