It was great to see so many of your at Parent Night and Hopes and Dreams conferences last week. If you were not able to make it, please know that we are always available to address your concerns and questions. Please don't ever hesitate to e-mail us. We have added a link to the left to the Keynote presentation we used at Parent Night. There was a lot of information given to you at once, please feel free to look back at the presentation and reach out if you have any questions.
Here is what is going on in our room this week:
Math:
We will continue with unit one in Everyday math. We will work with calculators, money and patterns this week and should be ready for our first assessment by the end of the week next week. Our math homework for the week is:
Wednesday: 1.9
Thursday: 1.10
Friday: 1.11
Notice: This week there is a math log on the back of the reading log. Students should record the amount of time spent on math on this log. (See homework expectations on this site for additional information.)
Note: For anything that requires your child to clip photos out of the paper or bring in objects to the classroom, you do not need to send these items to school. Your child is welcome to bring items in, but this is not a requirement.
Reading:
We will continue to focus on jotting and working in partnerships in Reading Workshop. We will also introduce hunting skills - how to look for details in our reading. Teachers will also read and informally asses students daily. Students should continue to read 30 minutes at least four nights each week and log this reading on their log. Remember to total minutes and pages each week! Logs are due each Monday.
Writing:
Students have been collecting ideas for our personal narrative work in their Writing Notebooks. Homework this week is to use the beginning of the year expectations (glued in the notebook) to guide writing assignments done for homework. This week's homework in writing is to take one of the small moment ideas and write about it using the guidelines. Remember that writing notebooks may go home each night, but they MUST come back to school EACH day. Since this is a short week, this writing assignment is due NEXT Monday, 9/15.
Our grammar focus this week is parts of speech and choosing the appropriate ending/punctuation mark for our sentences.
We continue our state study in Social Studies. We started with Georgia, and we are adding states each week. Ask your child to tell you the capital of Florida and what you will find to the west of that state. We have also finished putting together our class mission statement. We are going to do a great job respecting ourselves, each other, and our environment.
Have a great week!
Meadow & Anna
